RHS student wins gold at Winter Special Olympics
By JENNIFER BULTER
Earlier this month Riverside High School student Matthew Franken of Basin traveled to Jackson Hole to compete in the annual Special Olympics Wyoming Winter Games. Franken competed in giant slalom, slalom, and super G categories. He proudly achieved a gold medal in the super G race, silver medal in the giant slalom, and a bronze in the slalom.
Franken competed with the Washakie County team because Big Horn County does not have a team formed. According to Barbra Anderson, Franken’s grandmother, she wanted a team to be formed in this county because of the benefits the Special Olympics offers to the competitors. There are 27 team members from Worland that competed with Franken in Jackson Hole.
The three-day event started at the Jackson High School with the opening ceremony. The next day competitors started competing in the afternoon continuing to the next morning. Franken said, “It was a really hard race, I was against five different kids.”
Franken said competing in the slalom was the most difficult part. “It was really hard getting down with the flags,” he said. But his favorite part of the weekend was just being able to ski and have fun.
Anderson said Franken practiced weeks in advance to prepare for the Olympics, even traveling to Worland every Wednesday.
According to Anderson, Franken has not always competed in skiing; having competed previously in bowling and swimming. Franken had only started skiing with the assistance of the couch Dr. James Gilman, a dentist out of Worland.
Franken was really proud of his fellow team members. He said, “It was fun! The team did great. A lot of the team members got first and second places.” Anderson said her favorite part was watching the competitors support one another and how they are excited to cheer each athlete who received a medal or a ribbon. She said, “They are all so accepting, nonjudgmental, and cohesive between one another. “
Anderson said, “It is very important for the community to get involved and volunteer with the Special Olympics. Once you are around special needs children it can change your life just from the hugs and smiles you receive. It also changes the athletes. It brings good self-esteem, solid relationships, and helps them mature to their fullest potential.”
Franken had a great and successful time at the Special Olympics Wyoming Winter Games and is planning to compete in the Special Olympics Wyoming Summer Games coming up in a few months.

Big Horn knocks off Riverside; Rebels rebound to beat Lady Blue

By Marlys Good
It was a weekend of contrasts for the Riverside Lady Rebels. Huskies about to enter tougher waters
By Nathan Oster
One by one, the challengers to the top-ranked 1A team in the state have fallen.
But this weekend, the Burlington Huskies might get their toughest test to date from a 1A opponent when they travel to Ten Sleep to face the Pioneers, who have yet to lose a game this season.
It’ll be a match-up of No. 1 versus No. 3 — and to make it even more intriguing, Burlington Coach Dan LaRose will be in search of his 100th career victory at Burlington to go along with 17 losses.
By any measuring stick, it’s a big game.

“We played hard on both ends of the court, had great looks, and moved the ball well; we just didn’t shoot as well as we would have liked,” said Coach Cory Sova of the win over the Lady Bobcats. “We played so hard and so well together — that was the difference.

Lady Rebels nail down conference title

By Marlys Good
It wasn’t easy but the Lady Rebels did it. They kept their conference record spotless with a four game 25,22, 20-25, 25-19, 30-28, victory over the Lady Bobcats in Thermopolis Friday.
Riverside had to overcome poor serving, 80 percent as a team, to seal the win. “We missed 19 serves in the match — that’s pretty much one whole game,” said Coach Lindsay Schaffner. “We were down 0-5 in the first game but found a way to win it. In the last game we were up 24-21, before Thermopolis made a run and tied it at 24. It could have gone either way several times. We were very happy, very lucky, the ball bounced our way.”
While poor serving was definitely a negative, winning in spite of it was a positive. “That part of our game was not there, and coming back and being able to win, put a positive spin on the negative aspect.”

G-R has four state qualifiers heading into final home dual

By Nathan Oster

A third of the way through its 10-week season, Greybull-Riverside has already seen four of its team members qualify for the State 3A Swimming and Diving Championships scheduled for Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 in Gillette.
Though the team success has been limited by a lack of numbers, G-R is excelling individually –– and no one more so than senior Hope Anderson, who has bettered the state qualifying standards in five events: the 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, and the 100, 200 and 500 freestyles.
Right behind her, having qualified in the 100 backstroke and 100 and 200 freestyles, is Amber Getzfried, followed by Leah Hoblit, in the 100 breaststroke, and Ariel Mead, in the diving.
An invitational Saturday in Riverton was the latest opportunity for G-R’s top swimmers and divers to showcase their talents.  Facing the top competition in the state’s 4A schools, G-R didn’t make a run as a team, but did have some individual breakthroughs.
